Cefn Coed Community Trail
The Cefn Coed Community Trail is a pupil-led project created by Year 6 at Ysgol y Graig to celebrate the people, places, history and community that make Cefn Coed y Cymer special. Cefn Coed Community Trail
What began as a simple classroom idea developed into a permanent community learning resource. Pupils were given a real audience and a genuine purpose: to research local history, shape accurate and engaging content, use digital technology creatively and share their learning beyond the school gates.
The project brought together several important partnerships. Pupils worked with Anthony Bunko to develop historically grounded literacy content, the museum helped check facts before information entered the public domain, and Smart Signz supported the design, production and installation of the main map and ten trail points.
Literacy was at the heart of the project. Pupils researched local sources, selected relevant information, drafted content for a real audience and refined their work through editing, feedback and factchecking. Because the finished work would be shared publicly, accuracy and quality mattered.
Technology then helped bring the history to life. Digital tools were used to transform research into accessible content that residents and visitors could explore while walking through the locality. QR codes at the trail points give access to creative content made by pupils, linking local stories to the exact places where they happened.
The project also gave pupils a direct insight into local industry. They visited Smart Signs, saw professional design and production processes first-hand, and learned how physical signage is created and installed in the community.
The trail is firmly rooted in the Curriculum for Wales. It brings together learning in Humanities, Languages, Literacy and Communication, Science and Technology, as well as cross-curricular learning through an authentic local project. Cefn Coed Community Trail
It is also a strong example of Cynefin in action. By exploring the history, people, industry and places around them, pupils developed a deeper understanding of their locality and a stronger sense of identity and belonging. The completed trail now helps families and residents see familiar surroundings in a new way while preserving local knowledge for future generations.
The finished trail includes a main community map, ten physical trail points and QR-coded digital content, including pupil-created podcasts, poems, artwork and infographics.
The impact reaches beyond the pupils who created it. For learners, it has strengthened ownership, purposeful literacy, digital skills and real-world experience. For the school, it is a reusable curriculum resource and a powerful example of partnership working. For the wider community, it provides free access to local stories and a new way for families to explore Cefn Coed together.
At Ysgol y Graig, the Community Trail represents exactly what we want learning to be:
rooted in place, shaped by pupil voice, connected to the community and purposeful beyond the classroom.
