Down Syndrome – Information and Support for Parents
Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome. Children with Down syndrome are individuals first, with their own personalities, strengths, interests and ways of learning.
Some children with Down syndrome may experience differences in areas such as speech and language, memory, motor skills, processing speed and learning. They may also have many strengths, including strong social awareness, determination, visual learning skills, empathy and a positive response to routines and repetition.
At Ysgol y Graig, we focus on understanding the individual child, building on their strengths and ensuring they are fully included in school life.
Things you can try at homeSome strategies that may help include:
Communication and learning
Some children with Down syndrome may understand more than they are able to express verbally.
Using clear language, visual support and additional processing time can make a significant difference. It is helpful to avoid rushing a child to answer and to give them time to show what they know in different ways.
Children may also benefit from repetition and overlearning. Revisiting skills regularly helps learning become secure and supports greater independence.
Supporting independence
Developing independence is important for all children.
Encourage your child to attempt tasks for themselves before stepping in to help. Small responsibilities at home can build confidence, self-esteem and practical life skills.
The aim is to provide enough support for your child to succeed while gradually reducing that support as their confidence and skills develop.
Talk to us
If you would like to discuss your child’s communication, learning, independence, wellbeing or progress, please speak to their class teacher in the first instance.
We can discuss what is working well at home and in school and agree strategies together. Where appropriate, the class teacher can work alongside our ALNCo Mrs Pomeroy, support staff and relevant outside professionals to ensure your child receives the support they need.
Strong partnership between home, school and other professionals can help us provide consistent support and ensure that the child remains at the centre of decisions.
