Literacy at Ysgol y Graig
At Ysgol y Graig, we believe that strong literacy skills open the door to learning across the whole curriculum.
We want every child to become a confident speaker, thoughtful reader and increasingly independent writer. Literacy is therefore taught explicitly and then applied meaningfully across different Areas of Learning and Experience.
Our approach places a strong emphasis on:
We know that children need opportunities to talk before they can write effectively. Through discussion, questioning, explanation and presentation, pupils learn to organise their thinking, listen carefully to others and communicate their ideas with increasing confidence.
Reading is central to our curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to read widely, develop fluency, understand what they read and discuss texts thoughtfully. We want children to see reading not only as a skill, but as a source of enjoyment, knowledge and possibility.
Writing is taught progressively, with pupils building secure basic skills before applying them in increasingly ambitious and extended pieces. Children are supported to understand the purpose and audience for their writing, make appropriate vocabulary and grammatical choices and improve their work through feedback and reflection.
At Ysgol y Graig, literacy is everyone's responsibility. Teachers deliberately create opportunities for pupils to apply speaking, reading and writing skills across the curriculum so that learning becomes connected, purposeful and transferable.
Our aim is for every child to leave Ysgol y Graig able to communicate confidently, read with understanding and write with accuracy, creativity and independence.
