Welsh at Ysgol y Graig
At Ysgol y Graig, we are proud of our Welsh identity and committed to helping every child develop confidence in using the Welsh language.
We want pupils to see Welsh as a living, everyday language that belongs in the classroom, around the school and within our wider community. Our aim is to develop positive attitudes towards Welsh and to encourage children to use the language naturally, confidently and with pride.
Our approach places a strong emphasis on:
Welsh is woven through daily school life. Pupils are encouraged to use familiar phrases, greetings and classroom language regularly so that Welsh becomes part of their everyday experience rather than something used only during a lesson.
Our Phrase of the Week gives children a clear focus for practising and using new language, while Seren yr Wythnos celebrates pupils who make a real effort to speak Welsh and use it confidently.
We also provide opportunities for pupils to learn about and celebrate Welsh history, culture, music, traditions and their local Cynefin, helping them develop a strong sense of belonging and pride in where they come from.
As children progress through the school, we want them to become increasingly confident in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Welsh, while understanding the importance of bilingualism in modern Wales.
Our aim is for every child to leave Ysgol y Graig proud to be Welsh, proud of their community and confident in continuing their journey as a bilingual learner.
